Sales Development Manager

What is your job role?

I look after three branches: Wakefield, Mexborough and Doncaster.  I manage a territory of more than 100 customers, who I work with to ensure that they get the best service from Buildbase. I am responsible for visiting them regularly, keeping in touch, ensuring their terms are correct and overseeing the day-to-day management of their needs.

What’s it like to work for Buildbase?

I have worked for Buildbase for nearly two years and I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment. It is a great place to work. My direct manager is extremely approachable and supportive, particularly when I have experienced challenging situations at work or even at home. I am part of a fantastic team and thoroughly enjoy working with my branches. We work really well together to address any issues or frustrations, making improvements along the way.

What do you enjoy about your role?

I love almost every aspect of my job. I get to meet lots of existing and new customers daily and I enjoy providing them with exceptional service and support so that they can get their jobs done. I get a massive sense of satisfaction when I open and develop new accounts and also when my customers get what they need and I have helped that to happen. I enjoy looking for solutions to customer problems and working with them to ensure Buildbase becomes their merchant of choice.

How did you get into the industry?

I have to confess that I fell into construction. I had returned to university as a mature student when my children were young and my intention was to become a teacher. Having completed my placement I realised that education was not the sector I wanted to be in, so I applied for a job doing telesales at a local landscaping company with the intention to decide what I wanted to do afterwards. I was in touch with a friend who worked for another merchant and she mentioned that they needed an external sales executive, so I applied and was lucky enough to get the job. I have since worked for a variety of merchants and a manufacturer before joining Buildbase in 2018.

What advice would you give to other
women wanting to work in the industry?

Don’t feel intimidated or let the fact that it is a male-dominated industry put you off. Give it a go! While it may not be the most glamorous place to be when you are ankle deep in mud and rain on site, it is very rewarding. Having a thick skin and being resilient can also be beneficial.
